If you're a reader of The ALAN Review, you have access to articles about YA literature, author interviews, and news about ALAN. What you may not realize is that the professional journal you hold in your hands started out as a mimeographed newsletter by first ALAN Review editor, Alleen Nilsen. What may surprise you even more is that The ALAN Review is a relatively young journal, with Volume 1, Number 1 coming out in August, 1974.

Alleen Nilsen has collected those journals from the beginning and has graciously shared the first page of each of them with us. They’ve been scanned and are available below in pdf files. So if you’re a history buff, a fan of important documents, or just plain curious how ALAN evolved, the newsletters are a must read.

  • Volume 1, Number 1
  • Volume 1, Number 2
  • Volume 2, Number 1
  • Volume 2, Number 2
  • Volume 3, Number 1
  • Volume 3, Number 2
  • Volume 3, Number 3
  • Volume 4, Number 1
