2003 Annual Report, Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of the NCTE

The 2002 ALAN Breakfast, held Saturday morning during the NCTE Convention in Atlanta, featured a thought-provoking speech by National Book Award author Virginia Euwer Wolff. Assembly business at the Breakfast included the introduction of new Board members, congratulating Stacie Valdez of Wichita, KS, for receiving an ALAN Foundation grant, and the announcement of the winners of ALANs two major awards. Paul Zindel received the 2002 ALAN Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of young adult literature, and Theresa "Terry" Borzumato received the Hipple Service Award for her meritorious service to ALAN.

Sunday evening, ALAN members and Workshop participants enjoyed themselves at the annual ALAN reception, which was sponsored by publishers and organized by Maria Padilla of Hyperion Press.

The annual ALAN Workshop was held on the Monday and Tuesday immediately after the 2002 NCTE Convention. Chris Crowe chaired the Workshop, and award-winning author Chris Crutcher keynoted the Workshop, which attracted more than 350 participants and featured over thirty of the most popular writers for young adults.

Beyond its Breakfast, Workshop and other convention activities, ALAN also publishes annually three issues of THE ALAN REVIEW, a journal devoted solely to the field of literature for adolescents. During this convention James Blasingame and Lori Atkins Goodson were selected to succeed Pamela Sissi Carroll as coeditors of THE ALAN REVIEW.

Because of increasing costs and inflation, the ALAN Board unanimously approved raising its dues to $20 for individual memberships, $30 for institutional memberships, and $10.00 for student memberships.

Throughout the year the following were accomplished:

    • THE ALAN REVIEW has been included in ProQuests electronic online database service.
    • THE ALAN REVIEW, instead of being published and printed independently, will be published and printed by NCTE.
    • The ALAN Web site (www.alan-ya.org) has been expanded to include a
    • speakers bureau and an authors bureau containing the names and contact information for speakers and authors who are available for school, in-service, library, etc., programs involving young adult literature.
    • Adding to the ALAN Web site Bills Books, where each month Bill Mollineaux provides ten annotated book recommendations for books that will appeal to teens.

The officers and directors of ALAN for 2002 2003 are Chris Crowe, past-president; Bill Mollineaux, president; Michael Cart, president-elect; Gary Salvner, executive secretary; Susan Gleason Yates, Sharyn November, Sharon Stringer, Marshall A. George, Kathryn H. Kelly, Judith Hayn, Jean Brown, James Cook, and Carolyn Lott, directors. NCTEs Bill Subick serves as ALAN treasurer.
