2004 ANNUAL REPORT, ASSEMBLY ON LITERATURE FOR ADOLESCENTS OF THE NCTE (ALAN)
The annual ALAN Breakfast was held on Saturday morning during the NCTE Conference in San Francisco. The keynote speaker was award-winning young adult author Jack Gantos. The following Assembly business was also conducted during the Breakfast: The ALAN Award for distinguished contributions to the field of young adult literature was presented, jointly, to authors Norma Fox Mazer and Harry Mazer. The Ted Hipple Service Award was presented to R. Jerry Weiss. Also, two ALAN Foundation grants were awarded to John Noell Moore and Cathleen Yetter.
On Sunday evening of the Conference members and guests enjoyed the annual ALAN Reception, which was sponsored by ten participating publishers and coordinated by Angus Killick of Hyperion Books.
The annual ALAN Workshop took place on Monday and Tuesday immediately following the NCTE Convention. ALAN President Bill Mollineaux chaired the Workshop, the theme of which was "Striking It Rich with Young Adult Lit." The keynote speaker was Virginia R. Monseau of Youngstown State University. A total of thirty authors made presentations to the more than 350 attendees. A special feature of this year's Workshop was a celebration of the lives of recently deceased members and friends of ALAN, including William C. Morris, Joan Lowery Nixon, C. Anne Webb, and Paul Zindel.
In other action conducted throughout the year, the ALAN Board approved a new program entitled "Gallo Grants." Funded by long-time member Don Gallo, this program will support travel to the ALAN Workshop by teachers who are beginning their careers.
Members approved changes to the Constitution in the fall of 2003 to validate ALAN's status as a tax-exempt organization and to approve two new Board positions: Membership Secretary and ALAN Webmaster.
Also, under the co-editorship of James Blasingame and Lori Atkins Goodson, three issues of The ALAN Review were published.
The officers and directors of ALAN for 2003-2004 are: Michael Cart, President; Bill Mollineaux, Past-President; Patty Campbell, President-Elect; Gary Salvner, Executive Secretary; Joan Kaywell, Membership Secretary; David Gill, ALAN Webmaster, and Directors: Christie Jo "CJ" Bott, Jean Brown, Pamela Sissi Carroll, James Cook, Marshall A. George, Judith Hayn, Kathryn H. Kelly, Carolyn Lott, and Edward T. Sullivan. NCTE's Bill Subick continues to serve as ALAN Treasurer.
