Welcome to the new ALAN Online! The change in site design heralds many changes in the ALAN organization. The most obvious is a shift in content management systems (from Joomla to Wordpress), and indication in the change in webmasters. Officially beginning his term in November 2008 (but transitioning into the role as of oh, now) is Matt Skillen, who takes over from long-time (i.e. old) webmaster David Gill.
Matthew Skillen is a doctoral student at Kansas State University working toward a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. Before returning to higher education, Matthew served the community of Maize, KS for four years as a seventh and eighth grade language arts teacher and drama coach. As a recipient of the Kansas Horizon Award, Matthew was recognized as one of Kansas’ finest young teachers during his first year of service. Matthew’s research interests include narrative inquiry, student literacy, technology and English education. Matt’s goal is to make the ALAN site more interactive, which the change to WP will make possible.
In addition, Pam Cole has taken over the editorship of the monthly book review column. Pam B. Cole is a Distinguished Professor at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. She is a former high school English teacher and middle school English/reading teaching in an at-risk low-socioeconomic school in the Applachian region of Virginia. Recipient of numerous awards for excellence in teaching, scholarship and professional service, her work has been published widely in English Language Arts and reading journals and books, including The ALAN Review, The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Voices from the Middle, and SIGNAL Journal. She is a past president of SIGNAL and former editor of SIGNAL Journal.
The title Bill’s Best Books, kept in honor of the column’s originating editor, Bill Mollineaux, has changed to ALAN’s Picks to reflect the plethora of reviews Pam has lined up each month. You’ll find her first column below.
You can find contact info for Matt and Pam in under “Contact” on the left corner Pages menu.
Not to be outdone, Jim Blasingame and Lori Goodson have announced that they are stepping down as editors of The ALAN Review. A formal search committee has been formed. Look for an announcement about the search from Search Chair Sissi Carroll coming soon.
