Our ALAN Picks website page is evolving to better reflect our mission as an ALAN organization. We value critical engagement with young adult texts. The new column will be an online publication which features reviews of selected YA texts paired with analyses and teaching strategies designed to increase student engagement with the selected texts in secondary and university classroom and library communities.
Teams of three or more authors (librarians, students, teachers, university educators, or other YA community members) are invited to submit an online manuscript for review and potential publication. YA texts selected for inclusion must either be advanced reader copies or publications that are less than a year old.
Submissions should include:
- a comprehensive review of the text;
- a rationale for including the text in school curricula and/or libraries;
- culturally responsive and sustaining teaching strategies, activities, and/or assessments for use with the selected text; and
- Optional: a written or video-recorded author interview directed to students as the audience. This recording can be arranged following acceptance of the publication.
Please review the ALAN Statement on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion before submitting (see below). ALAN will publish approximately five columns each year on the ALAN Picks section of the ALAN organization’s website and will be shared in the newsletter and on the social media platforms.
We will be accepting submissions for ALAN Picks following the selection of a new co-editor.
Editors of ALAN Picks:
For transparency, we share the new job description for the editors of ALAN Picks. The editorial team will consist of two co-editors who will serve three year terms. A selection committee consisting of the Executive Committee and the remaining editor of ALAN Picks will review applications for incoming editors. The editor positions will be staggered so that new editors can be mentored in their first year. Initially, Bryan Gillis, the former editor of the old ALAN Picks column will begin in the role of co-editor and the first co-editor selected will serve a fourth year in order to serve as mentor to the new co-editor.
Duties of the Editors include:
- Reading all submissions and making determinations of which columns will be selected for publication. This may, at times, include recruiting outside reviewers to offer feedback for the authors of the columns.
- Assisting with reaching out to publishers to request texts if authors indicate interest in receiving an Advanced Reader Copy to be potentially featured in ALAN Picks.
- Reaching out to potential authors of columns to ensure regular publication.
- Providing revision suggestions for submissions to ensure that analysis and teaching strategies are thorough and well-supported with the text.
- Making final determinations of which submissions to publish.
- Editing and formatting the column for readability and professionalism.
- Working with the webmaster to ensure that publications are featured regularly on the website (approximately five publications per year).

ALAN Statement on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
It is the policy of the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and its Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of NCTE (ALAN) to embrace human diversity and demonstrate sensitivity to the concerns of people historically underrepresented or marginalized. This includes all underrepresented groups reflecting the range of human differences, among which are race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical challenges, and religion. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive list, only a list of examples.
Among our aims are to include a diverse range of participants (1) on appointed commissions, boards, committees, task forces, and other official groups; (2) among the leadership of the above groups; and (3) among the nominees presented by each nominating committee. In addition, in NCTE conventions and workshop sessions we will include substantial programs dealing with interests of a diverse range of participants, and engage leaders and/or consultants who are practicing teachers, librarians, youth program directors, etc., representing levels of instruction involved who reflect the group whose concerns around which a program revolves. In addition, ALAN will attempt to ensure that all facilities for participants at events have physical and sensory accessibility with the help of NCTE and the convention venue.
We also resolve to include people representing all groups in verbal and visual materials intended to represent or describe ALAN. In 2018 ALAN established an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Advisory Committee (EDI), and a position on the ALAN Board of Directors for the EDI Committee Chair. The purpose of this officer and advisory committee includes recommendations for policy creation and for concrete actions for implementation. The EDI Committee will provide an annual report of advisements, recommendations and accomplishments to the ALAN Board of Directors at each annual board meeting in November, the contents of which will be passed on to the NCTE.
